Dean Natalie D. Eddington, PhD, FAAPS, FCP, delivered her annual State of the School of Pharmacy Address on Nov. 9 to an auditorium packed with faculty, staff, students, preceptors, and University of Maryland officials.


“The foundation of what we do at the School is based on our mission to lead pharmacy education, scientific discovery, patient care, and community engagement in the state of Maryland and beyond,” she said. “The annual State of the School of Pharmacy Address provides an introspective opportunity to examine our endeavors, opportunities, and challenges and to focus our journey as we go forward.” Read more…

Child care center construction to begin soon

The Goddard School, a chain that specializes in early-childhood development, is expanding its presence in Clark County with construction of a $3 million school set to break ground Tuesday in the Salmon Creek area.

Brookline High School peer leadership program receives grant

The Brookline High School Peer Leadership Program has been awarded $2,500 from The 84 Movement to work on an initiative to support a pharmacy ban on tobacco in Brookline, as well as to organize an educational initiative about tobacco for Brookline High students as part of Kick Butts Day at the high school. The Peer Leadership Program is a subsidiary of the Brookline Coalition Against Substance Abuse. Read more…

Pharmacists Improve Care of Diabetics While Cutting Costs, Research Shows

ScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2010) — The role of pharmacists hasn’t received much attention in the debate on the cost of health care. But national and regional studies show that when pharmacists directly participate in patient care, they significantly reduce treatment costs and improve outcomes.

A study on diabetic patients by the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences identified cost savings with improvements in a key indicator of glucose control in diabetes patients, the hemoglobin A1C measurement. The A1C provides a three-month average of the amount of excess glucose in the blood. Higher A1Cs indicate that a patient is at higher risk for developing long-term complications associated with diabetes, such as kidney disease or vision problems.

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy has been awarded — along with the Saint Louis University Department of Pharmacology and Physiology — a $974,024 National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to study ways of relieving chronic pain through new approaches in treating neuroinflammation.

Edwardsville, Ill. (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 3, 2009 — The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy has been awarded — along with the Saint Louis University Department of Pharmacology and Physiology — a $974,024 National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to study ways of relieving chronic pain through new approaches in treating neuroinflammation.

Funding for the NIH grant was made possible in part by federal stimulus funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
