SUWANEE – The new Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy (PCOM) is scheduled to open in August 2010 in Suwanee with a focus of providing students with a four-year doctor of pharmacy degree that will prepare them for regional needs.

At its January 2008 meeting, the PCOM Board of Trustees authorized a search for the founding dean and chief academic officer of the new School of Pharmacy. In October 2008, Mark P. Okamoto, PharmD, was named to that position. A national search has brought a distinguished group of pharmacy educators to Suwanee to form the core leadership of the new school.

The Pre-Pharmacy Student Association, a networking tool for prospective pre-pharmacy students, has entered its third year of operation, Krysta Kadlitz, a senior from Chattanooga and association’s president, said.

“We give students valuable knowledge for the [Pharmacy College Admissions Test] dates and study tools, pharmacy school admission process and guidelines and friendship from peers pursing the same goals,” she said.

“We also take trips to local pharmacy schools to give students perspectives into what these schools are looking for in potential candidates…so they can better position themselves… to succeed,” Kadlitz said.

Regarding University of the Cumberland’s bid for a pharmacy school
It has been reported that most of the likely pharmacy graduates would not remain in SE Kentucky anyway. Would they choose to start their careers in areas that pay more?

If the state is experiencing a shortage of pharmacists, it is strange that Kentucky Republicans do not simply alleviate the situation by using the oft touted “wisdom of the market place.” If you need more pharmacists, all you need to do is offer higher pay than is available elsewhere and they will flock to SE Kentucky.
Q:I ordered my medication through an online pharmacy. The pills I received look different than the ones I currently take that I bought at a local pharmacy. Will pills look different depending on what company made them? What steps could I take to make sure the pills I ordered online are the correct type?

A: Many common and useful medications are available from different drug makers. Each company uses a different shape and color for the pills it produces. The important thing is that the amount of active ingredient in the pill should be the same as on your original prescription. If the amount is the same, your new pills will work the same as your old ones. ASCP Research and Education Foundation
