How city officials sorted out who should get the <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/H1N1/"title="H1N1" >H1N1 flu <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/vaccine/"title="vaccine" >vaccine at Chicago’s first public clinics was among the questions nagging area residents in the days since President Barack Obama declared <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >swine flu a national emergency. They also want to know why Cook County has been slow to offer its own clinics, and how the flu might affect the holidays.

Below are edited excerpts of some queries sent to the Tribune’s reporting team this week, with the answers:

QI am pregnant with triplets, due to give birth in 10 days. I brought my 2-year-old son, my husband and my mom (our caretaker) to Truman College’s clinic on Saturday. We waited in line for 5 1/2 hours for the vaccine. … What kind of screening are they doing for these shots, just first come, first served?

AWith a limited supply of vaccine at each clinic, Chicago Health Department officials are trying to limit it to high-priority groups. But mostly they are relying on people being honest when asked in line if they fall into one of those groups.

“We’re trusting people to do the right thing,” said Julie Morita, director of the department’s immunization program.

According to Tim Hadac, a department spokesman, officials are confident that nearly everyone who got vaccines at the first clinics was in a high risk group, although a “small percentage” might have slipped through. Some people had asthma, diabetes, immune disorders and other chronic illnesses that would not always be obvious to other people in line, he said.

Overall, those eligible for early vaccines are <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/health-care/"title="health care" >health care workers; pregnant women; children and young adults ages 6 months to 24 years; people who live with or care for infants younger than 6 months; and people ages 25 to 64 with chronic health conditions. The public clinics are being offered Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at six City Colleges campuses as long as there is demand and supply.

QWe are going to visit my in-laws for Thanksgiving and we were told we can’t see my father-in-law unless we have H1N1 shots. I have chronic sinusitis plus a diminished immune system, so how likely am I to find the vaccine before Thanksgiving? Is there a list of locations that have the vaccine?

AYou should call your doctor or health care provider to see if it is available, and where. Once the vaccine is readily available, a list of health departments and pharmacies will be made available on the Illinois Department of Public Health Web site, www.idph.state.il.us.

The vaccine continues to be in short supply across the country because of production delays. Health officials have said they expect a better supply by mid-November and that by early December, the vaccine should be widely available. Most vaccine is now going to local health departments and hospitals.

QThe city of Chicago has the vaccine. DuPage County has it. Cook County Department of Health — nada. Why is Cook County so behind?

ACook County Health Department officials said they got their initial 20,000 doses of vaccine late last week. Six thousand doses were allocated to hospitals in suburban Cook County and about 5,000 doses to public <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/schools/"title="schools" >schools in Palatine, the first district designated for student vaccinations. Other doses have been reserved for health care workers at the county Health Department. No vaccine is currently available for public clinics, a county spokesman said. Officials were “cautiously optimistic” the department will get more vaccine early next week that will allow for public clinics to begin soon in suburban Cook County.

QAre there precautions a family should take regarding trick-or-treat candy this Halloween?

AState and local health officials recommend giving out wrapped candy. Rather than allowing children to reach into a bowl, hand it to them. Children should wash their hands, use sanitizer and wash any fruit or other food.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Vaccinations against the H1N1 <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >swine flu virus began in the United States this week as part of the Obama administration’s mass immunization effort to help limit the worst effects of the pandemic.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects up to 7 million doses of <a href="http://pharmacy-in-<a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/jobs/"title="jobs" >jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/vaccine/”title=”vaccine” >vaccine by the end of this week, mainly AstraZeneca unit MedImmune’s nasal spray.

The U.S. government has ordered vaccine from five companies: Sanofi-Aventis SA, CSL Ltd, Novartis AG, GlaxoSmithKline and MedImmune.

H1N1 flu vaccination, H1N1, flu, vaccination, program

Here are some questions and answers about the immunization program:

HOW MUCH MONEY IS THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION SPENDING TO BUY

AND DISTRIBUTE VACCINE?

The federal government has spent or set aside $6.4 billion for H1N1 immunization so far. About $1.5 billion is for enough bulk antigen to create over 250 million vaccine doses, according to official statistics. The sum also includes $1.4 billion to help states and hospitals plan and prepare for the vaccination campaign.

Congress appropriated $7.65 billion in June for H1N1 and other pandemic influenza preparedness.

(Editing by Cynthia Osterman)

HOW IS THE VACCINE BEING DISTRIBUTED?

Vaccine production is expected to reach 40 million doses by mid- to late-October and continue to rise at a rate of about 20 million per week through December. The U.S. government has ordered 250 million doses and says this should be enough to ensure coverage for every American who wants it.

The CDC is working with <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/healthcare/"title="healthcare" >healthcare services firm McKesson Corp. to distribute doses to 90,000 vaccination sites designated by state and local health departments. The sites include clinics, doctor’s offices, hospitals, <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/schools/"title="schools" >schools and retail chains where vaccine will be available.

The government says its centralized distribution system can reach more sites than the direct manufacturer distribution used for seasonal flu vaccine.

The United States hopes to vaccinate 160 million Americans considered at highest risk of death or severe disease by the beginning of December. These include pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes or heart disease, and children and young adults.

The United States has also offered 10 percent of its vaccine supply, or about 25 million doses, to help the World Health Organization distribute vaccine to less developed countries.

WHEN DID VACCINE BEGIN MOVING TO DISTRIBUTION SITES?

The vaccine has taken less than a week to arrive at designated sites after orders are placed.

On Tuesday, health officials said the 50 U.S. states had ordered 2.2 million vaccine doses, or more than 90 percent of the 2.4 million doses currently available. Limited vaccination started on Monday.

U.S. health officials and other experts say some states may not have finalized their immunization programs while others are limited by constraints on budgets or storage capacity. State and local health departments also are still administering seasonal flu vaccinations, which became available earlier than usual this year.

The Health and Human Services Department expects orders to increase as vaccine becomes available in the more widely used injectable form.

Arunraj V.S. asked:

<a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >Swine Flu is a respiratory disease in pigs triggered by a virus called <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/H1N1/"title="H1N1" >H1N1. The new strain of H1N1 is a deadly combination of viruses from pigs, birds and humans. They symptoms of Swine Flu are sudden fever, coughing, extreme exhaustion and muscle aches. There is also diarrhea and vomiting more than normal flu.

Risk factors: Medical experts say that people, who are exposed areas where pigs flock are at risk of contracting the virus. The strains of Swine flu rarely pass on from humans to humans. In rare cases, the virus mutates into a form that can move from one person to another. The strain responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak has apparently undergone such a mutation and may stay like that for a longer period of time.

Can Swine flu be prevented or cured? There is no <a href="http://pharmacy-in-<a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/jobs/"title="jobs" >jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/vaccine/”title=”vaccine” >vaccine which can prevent swine flu. <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/medicines/"title="medicines" >Medicines like Tamiflu and Relenza can be effective, if taken in the early stages of the disease.

Is it safe to eat pork? Swine Flu is not caused by eating pork or its products including salami, ham and sausages. However, it is a good practice to cook pork over 70 degrees C, which kills the virus.

Why is it called swine flu? The virus is called swine flu because one of its surface proteins is similar to viruses that usually infect pigs. Pork industry in the US are putting pressure on the officials to change the name of the disease, because no pig as such have been found infected with this particular illness which has spread among humans.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Stay home if you get sick. Publ?c Health author?t?es recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.

In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (<a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/H1N1/"title="H1N1" >H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas. CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.

CDC has determined that this virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it not known how easily the virus spreads between people.

Symptoms : The symptoms of <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/headache/"title="headache" >headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How serious is swine flu infection?

Like seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. Between 2005 until January 2009, 12 human cases of swine flu were detected in the U.S. with no deaths occurring. However, swine flu infection can be serious. In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman in Wisconsin was hospitalized for pneumonia after being infected with swine flu and died 8 days later. A swine flu outbreak in Fort Dix, New Jersey occurred in 1976 that caused more than 200 cases with serious illness in several people and one death.

Spread of swine flu can occur in two ways:

Through contact with infected pigs or environments contaminated with swine flu viruses. Through contact with a person with swine flu. Human-to-human spread of swine flu has been documented also and is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

<a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/medicines/"title="medicines" >Medicines to treat swine flu?

CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with these swine influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

How long can an infected person spread swine flu to others?

People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?

There is no <a href="http://pharmacy-in-<a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/jobs/"title="jobs" >jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/vaccine/”title=”vaccine” >vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu.

There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.

Swine influenza – Swine influenza or <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the type A <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/H1N1/"title="H1N1" >H1N1 swine influenza virus (SIV). Humans in close proximity to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans.

Symptoms – Swine flu symptoms in humans are generally similar to regular flu (influenza) symptoms and include muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough, <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/headache/"title="headache" >headache, lack of appetite, fever, chills, and general weakness and discomfort. Other reported symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Transmission – Swine flu spreads from pigs to humans when humans are close to infected pigs. People working in barns or visiting livestock exhibits housing infected pigs are likely to get affected. Transmission from humans to humans can occur when the infected individual coughs or sneezes when others are close by. Putting one’s hands to the nose or mouth after touching anything with the flu viruses on it could also spread the infection. Consuming well-cooked pork and pork products won’t cause infection as cooking to an internal temperature of 160°F kills bacteria and viruses, including the swine flu virus.

Treatment and medication – While swine flu can generally be cured by the four antiviral drugs approved for curing flu in the US, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, the recent 2009 swine flu outbreak viruses have been found to be resistant to the first two drugs. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are now recommended for treatment and prevention of swine influenza.

Prevention – Swine flu can be prevented by taking certain precautionary measures, such as washing hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based hand wash. Staying away from infected individuals is important as their coughing or sneezing could spread the infection. If instances of infection are reported in your locality, stay indoors as far as possible. Swine flue <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/vaccine/"title="vaccine" >vaccine could be out by June 2009.

Wendy Stenberg-Tendys asked:

The threat of a pandemic is sweeping the world, through a new strain of <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >swine flu. Many deaths have been recorded in Mexico. Several other countries also have suspect cases reported, from as far apart as <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/france/"title="france" >France, Hong Kong, <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/canada/"title="canada" >Canada, Israel and New Zealand.

Caused by type A influenza Swine flu, is a respiratory disease. Studies have shown that the swine flu <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/H1N1/"title="H1N1" >H1N1 is common throughout pig populations worldwide, with 25% of all animals displaying antibody evidence of having the disease.

Swine flu viruses do not usually affect human beings. However, the current swine flu has a deadly mixture of a gene segment from bird flu, a segment from human flu, plus two genes from pig flu. Pigs are known to be the world’s best ‘mixing bowls’. This totally unknown virus is causing extreme concern, as humans have no immunity to the disease.

Swine flu can’t be contacted through eating pork products, however human-to-human infections are happening, without the victims having any contact with infected animals.

Here are simple precautions you need to use to provide self-protection against the threatened pandemic:

Make sure you cover your nose and mouth if you sneeze or cough. Ensure you get rid of the tissue in the rubbish can after you use it. Keep a mask handy in case anyone sneezes or coughs around you.

Just one sneeze thrusts 100,000 droplets into the air at around 90 mph, landing on everything around you. British researchers have found that in a subway train during rush hour, as many as 10% of all commuters can come in contact with the spray and residue from just one sneeze. 150 commuters may become ill from one uncovered sneeze, or cough. The rush of air from a cough travels at speeds of nearly 600 mph.

Always wash your hands frequently, for up to 20 seconds, with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Always wash your hands thoroughly prior to eating and whenever possible do not eat with your hands.

It is estimated over 80% of all infections are spread by hands. If you are not able to wash your hands, resort to using hand-sanitizers with 60% alcohol content. These are available in handy pocket size containers.

Attempt to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth and definitely avoid kissing on the cheeks.

Germs are passed more quickly that way than any other method of transmission.

Try to stay away from sick people. Isolation and keeping your distance are your most efficient protective measures. If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with other people, to keep them from becoming infected. Keep aware and recognize any abnormal symptoms. If you are in doubt, go and seek professional advice. Make sure you eat well, be careful of your sleep habits and take regular exercise. Increase your daily dose of vitamin C and practice good hygiene.

Swine flu can be treated. Though it is resistant to two of the four drugs approved for treating flu, two new arrivals, Tamiflu and Relenza have proven to be successful.

Mexico houses hundreds of industrial-scale hog facilities, known as ‘confined animal feeding operations’, where pigs are packed tightly in rows. Thousands of pigs are confined to indoor pens and grain-fed for market. Breeding sows are held in small metal crates where they spend the major part of their lives pregnant, or feeding a new litter of piglets. Up until now, Mexican hog workers, infected with swine flu, have rarely been the cause of infecting other humans, except for close family members.

Marin County’s other swine flu victims include a 55-year-old man from San Rafael, a 33-year-old pregnant woman and a 78-year-old man.

Anju Goel, the county’s deputy public health officer, say there have been 35 confirmed and 70 probable cases of swine flu in Marin.

But officials suspect there have been many more cases because tests to confirm swine flu are only performed in special circumstances.

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/swine-flu/"title="swine flu" >swine flu vaccination program is to start in October for at-risk groups, Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson said on Thursday, with most <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/vaccine/"title="vaccine" >vaccines coming from drugs firm GlaxoSmithKline.

A first batch of 300,000 vaccines will arrive this month with 54.6 million expected by December, Donaldson said, adding that exact supply levels would depend on the manufacturers.

“We are getting a lower supply from Baxter than we had envisaged so the majority of our vaccines will come from Glaxo,” Donaldson told reporters.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization said it expected the first vaccines to combat <a href="http://pharmacy-in-jobs.pharmacy-bg.com/tag/H1N1/"title="H1N1" >H1N1 flu to be ready for use in some countries from September.

Donaldson said the treatments would need to be approved by European medical regulators before vaccinations begin.

“In October we expect, provided the license is granted, to be able to give the first shots of vaccine,” he said.

The pace of new H1N1 infections in Britain has eased in recent weeks, with doctor consultations for flu-like illness falling by 34 percent last week.

The majority of cases have proven to be mild and the government plans to slash the number of flu call center staff from around 1,600 to less than 600 by August 23 because of the sharp drop in suspected infections.

But health experts expect another surge later in the year.

“We have seen an increase in the proportion of deaths among previously healthy people,” Donaldson said, adding that five of the eight new deaths in England over the last week were of otherwise healthy people.

“It is causing more deaths in healthy people than seasonal flu,” he said.

Fears the strain could become resistant to anti-viral drug Tamiflu have underscored the need to get vaccines to market quickly.

The government plans to immunize about 11 million people seen as most at risk first because it does not expect to have enough doses for the whole population before winter.

The first to be immunized will include about 5 million people aged over six months in current seasonal flu risk groups, all pregnant women, contacts of people with compromised immune systems, and about 2 million health and social care workers.

Healthy people over 65 will not be prioritized because they appear to have some natural immunity to the virus, the Department of Health said.
