Arizona pharmacists to begin administering vaccines

Arizona has just joined the list of states where pharmacists are now qualified to administer immunizations.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on July 10 signed into law House Bill 2164, which gives pharmacists the authority to administer immunizations, vaccines, and emergency medications, and sets out vaccine-connected reporting requirements and administrative duties for pharmacists in the state.

The bill states that any licensed pharmacist can, without a prescription, administer to adults immunizations or vaccines recommended by the adult immunization schedule or recommended for international travel by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pharmacists who choose to perform the service must report their administration of the drugs to the patient’s primary care physician within 48 hours. Pharmacists are also responsible for maintaining a record of the immunization.
