Persistent depression risk ‘doubles’ in abused children

Childhood abuse doubles the risk of developing multiple and long-lasting episodes of depression, say scientists.

A review, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, also suggests these patients are less likely to respond to treatment.

Nearly one in 20 people in the UK has this form of depression as a result of childhood abuse, say researchers.

The charity Sane said the study highlighted how damaging childhood trauma could be. Read more…

Ireland, UK top 19 nations on health cost-effectiveness

A new study has ranked the NHS as the second most cost-effective health care system, after Ireland, in a table of 19 developed western nations, and finds the US system to be the least efficient and effective.

The study, reported in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (JRSM), sought to “test the hypothesis that the USA healthcare system was superior to the NHS and 17 other western countries in reducing feasible mortality rates over the period 1979-2005,” say the researchers, led by Professor Colin Pritchard of Bournemouth University. Pfizer probed on “potentially improper overseas payments”

Pfizer is the latest drugmaker to come under the scrutiny of the US authorities over its overseas sales practices in the context of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

The US Department of Justice and Securities & Exchange Commission have been talking to a number of drugmakers in the last couple of years, as part of a wide-ranging investigation into the payment of kickbacks to “foreign health officials” in return for benefits such as the inclusion of products on formularies. US life sciences VC funding up 37% in 2nd-qtr 2011

US venture capital funding in the life sciences sector jumped 37% during second-quarter 2011, PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) has reported.

Venture capitalists invested $2.1 billion in 206 US life sciences deals during the quarter, says the study, which includes data from the PWC/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTree Report, based on data from Thomson Reuters. While this represents the seventh best quarter since MoneyTree Report began collecting data in 1995, the dollars invested in life sciences during the second quarter of the year declined 3% when compared with the same period of 2010. Devon baby has ‘live’ donor liver transplant in Birmingham

A critically ill baby from Torquay is recovering in hospital after undergoing a liver transplant in Birmingham.

One-month-old Lottie Bryon-Edmond underwent the surgery on Thursday night at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

She needed the transplant after developing the rare condition neonatal haemochromatosis, which meant toxic levels of iron built up in her liver. Read more…

Obama’s Health-Care Law Ruled Unconstitutional Over Insurance Requirement

The Obama administration’s health- care overhaul unconstitutionally requires Americans to maintain a minimum level of health insurance, a federal judge ruled, striking down the linchpin of the plan.

U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson in Richmond, Virginia, said yesterday that the mandate on individuals in President Barack Obama’s health-care legislation goes beyond Congress’s powers to regulate interstate commerce. Hudson severed the issue of the mandate, which is set to become effective in 2014, and didn’t address other provisions such as expanding Medicaid.

Flow of biotech venture dollars and deals shrivels in Q2

After you get past the bullish headline on PricewaterhouseCoopers’ release on second quarter venture funding in the life sciences industry–up 37%!–you’ll find that year-over-year the stream of venture dollars flowing into biotech shriveled, with significantly fewer deals available to finance new drug development.

Drawing from data gathered by Thomson Reuters, the PwC/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTree Report concluded that second quarter “biotechnology investing declined by 9% in dollars and dropped 24% in deals year-over-year with $1.2 billion going into 116 deals.”

Pfizer: Nigeria drug trial victims get compensation

US-based pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has made the first compensation payment to Nigerian families affected by a controversial drug trial 15 years ago.

It paid $175,000 (ÂŁ108,000) each to four families in the first of a series of payments it is expected to make.


The payouts are part of an out-of-court settlement reached in 2009. Read more…
